Me, fall for..for THAT!? Yes, I never thought I'd fall for it..... ...Fall for Love... *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* ~ ~ *I Was a Fool for April* ~ ~ *~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~* ~*~*~ Chapter One *~*~*~ It was a warm day in March, the winter slowly ebbing into spring. A group of girls passed me and I nodded, getting giggles and pink cheeks from it. I smile wickedly to myself. I love being handsome. I reached my destination, The Crown Cafe, and entered the sliding doors. "WAHOOOOOOOO!!!!!!!!!!!" Without even looking I knew who *that* voice was. I looked up to see no other than Meatball Head Tsukino, who had jumped over the counter and into my best friend's arms. "Hey Meatball Head, he's got a girlfriend!" I called out and she turned to me, her eyes glazed over with contempt. "Hello Chiba. Do you mind, we're having a private conversation." She said, jumping back into her stool. "Private? I think you interrupted the rock concert they're having in San Francisco with that mouth." I said. "Go find a life Darien, and stay out of mine!" She yelled. I walked over to her and grabbed one of her cheeks. "I can't, you're just so cute when you're mad." I said and she pulled away from me. "U.G.H!" She rolled her eyes, sticking her tongue out at me. "Grow up Meatball Head." I said, sticking out my tongue at her. "Geeze, will both of you stop it!" Andrew shouted and we closed out mouths, mumbling a soft apology. "So what was psycho here wahooing about?" I asked him, getting a humped from Serena. "I'm having a April Fool's party in a couple of weeks." Andrew replied, swiping the counter. Oh no, April Fool's, that dreaded holiday. "And we all know how much you love April Fool's Darien." "Don't start Andrew, I'm still mad at you from three years ago." I mumbled. "Why, what happened?" Serena asked. "Nothi-" "Well, three years ago I put a camera in his bathroom and got him singing in the shower. I brought it into school on April Fool's and put it all over to TV systems." Andrew's obnoxious voice drowned me out. I felt the blush in my cheeks rise as I heard Serena quietly cackling beside me. I looked over to her and she exploded into a laughing spasm, ending up on the floor. I looked over to Andrew, and saw him shrink under the gaze I gave him. I looked back down to see Serena gasping for breath. "Can't...can't breathe!" She said in between giggles. I rolled my eyes and with one swift movement pulled her back up in her seat. "Serena please!" I begged and she looked up at me, whipping her eyes. "Sorry Darien, but that's hilarious!" She giggled. "What was he singing to?" "Andrew don-" "I'm too sexy." Andrew blabbed and she erupted into laughter again, falling off the stool. "I'm too sexy! That is SO great!" She cackled. I looked back to Andrew and shook my head. "You just watch, I'll get you good Andrew." I swore, raising my fist up to his face. I stormed out of the Cafe, shoving my hands in my pockets. "Darien! Darien wait up!!" Oh great, I thought, and rolled my eyes. I came to a stop and suddenly felt somebody slam into me. "Oops." I turned around to see Serena rubbing her head. She looked up at me and smirked. "I'm sorry I was cracking up about you, but it was just so funny!" "Yeah, yeah..." I rolled my eyes and we started walking again. "If only I could get Andrew back. I've tried every year but he's just so impossible!" "Yeah, the only thing that would give him a heart attack is if we went out or something." Serena laughed, waving her hand in front of her face like she always did. *LIGHT BULB TURNING ON* I stopped dead in my tracks and looked at her. She turned around and looked at me quizzically. "I never thought I'd say it Serena, but you're a genius." I said. "Why thank you Darien...but what for?" She asked. "Andrew would never suspect us going out, it WOULD give him a heart attack. It's perfect! We'd pretend to go out these last remaining weeks before April Fool's and then drop the bomb on him at his party!" I said, throwing my hands victoriously in the air. "But Darien, we hate each other." Serena said plainly. Okay, this could be a problem. "Well, we can just say that all this teasing was just flirting, as Andrew really thinks anyways. You do want to get him back for putting that fake bug in your milkshake right?" I asked, and her eyes turned ablaze. She stuck out her hand and smirked evilly. "You have a deal!" I nodded and grabbed her hand, shaking it. "So, are you going to ask me out or what?" "Uh yeah. Meatball Head, will you go out with me?" I asked, getting down on one knee. She laughed down at me and took my extended hand. "I'd be glad to...Muffin." She sneered at the disgusted look I gave her. "Muffin, is that the best you can do?" I asked, thinking about what all the guys would say. "If you're going to call me Meatball Head, I get to call you a food group too!" She nodded indignantly. "Only fair, I guess." I shrugged. "Well, now that we're going out I guess we should go places. Like my friend is having a party tomorrow, we should go there together." "A..a senior party?" She looked at me, surprised. "No, a preschool party....Of course Serena." I rolled my eyes. "Wow, I've never been to a senior party...." She breathed. "Cool. What time?" "I'll pick you up at oh, about 8 okay?" I said and she nodded. "Well, I have to get home now. C-ya tomorrow MUFFIN." She laughed and skipped away. "This is gonna be great!" I smiled, walking in the opposite direction. The next day I walked up the school steps, and looked around to see everyone staring at me. Great, Serena must have told all her friends already. After I got up the steps I walked into the courtyard and looked around for my little social butterfly. Aha! There she was, surrounded by a flock of junior boys and her four best friends, Amy, Lita, Mina and Amy. She was sitting on the back of one of the benches, smiling and talking with her hands as she always does. Well, I thought with a smirk, here goes nothing. "Hey Meatball Head." I greeted, wrapping my arms around her slim waist. She stiffened for a second but smiled down at me, relaxing into my chest. "Hey...Muffin." She winked. I looked over to the boys and gave them a glare. "And what are you guys doing here? She's taken now." I muttered and they looked at me like a deer in headlights and sped away. "Darien, that wasn't very nice." She wagged a finger at me. Suddenly I saw Andrew out of the corner of my eye, and grabbed her finger and kissed the tip. She blushed and the girls' jaws dropped down. I looked over to Andrew to see his face as pale as the moon, his eyes as big as saucers. "You..you..." He stuttered, pointing a shaking finger at us. "YOU and YOU..THEM now." Serena and I laughed and she entwined our fingers. "Yup." She smiled. He shook his head and gulped. A smile suddenly washed over his face and he came towards us, smacking me on the shoulder. "About time! Sheesh, I thought I was going to have to lock you in the closet together or something!" He yelled, sighing. "I don't believe it..." Lita finally spoke up and the other girls just nodded dumbly. The first bell rang in the distance and Serena pushed off of me and stood up on the bench. She turned around to face me, first turning to Andrew and the girls, then back to me. She leaned down and pecked me on the forehead. "C-ya later, Muffin." She said and jumped off the bench. "C-ya later, my meatball." I smirked. "Common girls, we're gonna be late!" She waved to them and they unfroze, scampering after Serena. I turned back to Andrew to see his jaw wide open, pointing after Serena. I walked over to him and wrapped my arm around his shoulder, leading him into school. "Common Andrew, you don't want your face to get stuck like that do you?" I said and he shook his head. I let go of him and walked down the hall to my first period class. "....HOW???" I heard him yell and I laughed. This is going to be great! I met up with Serena after school, and we had a good laugh. "Did you see his face? Oh, talk about a Kodak moment!" She giggled as we walked to her house. "I know, I'm going to enjoy this very much! So how many people came up to you today and asked if it was for real?" I asked. "Oh, about the whole junior class and half of the seniors." She rolled her eyes. "Yeah, I found some of the boys in the locker room betting on how long this would last." "Did you put down 2 weeks?" She smiled. "Nah, I don't gamble." I smirked as we reached her house. "Well, I'll c- ya tonight at 8 I guess." "Yeah." She shook her head and walked up onto the porch. "Oh- and I want to compliment you on your acting this morning, we really had them going." I said and she opened the door and turned around. "Who said I was acting?" She winked and blew me a kiss before shutting the door on my confused face. Only five hours I stood on that very same porch with the same confused face, playing with the collar that was seeming to strangle me. I had taken an hour getting ready, trying to make everything perfect. Perfect, for what? Serena? Common Darien, you're taking this a little too seriously! I shook my head and rang the doorbell. The door swung open, and two angry brown eyes looked down the other end of a musket aimed at my forehead. "Uh...hi?" I gulped. "KENNETH TSUKINO!!!! Get that gun out of Darien's face this instant!" A woman with blue hair came running up next to him, and pulled the gun out of his hands, banging him on the head with it. "ARE YOU INSANE! Go sit down!" He gave me one last glare before bowing his head and walking away. I breathed out and quickly in, placing a hand over my heart. "I'm so sorry Darien, Ken is a little overprotective. Especially after that Seiya broke her heart." She shook her head slightly and beckoned me in. I stood in the entranceway while Serena's mother went up to get her. I turned around and stared at the pictures on a bookcase. One was of the whole entire family, another of Serena and her brother Sammy and two more of each of them. Serena sat on red brick steps, her pigtails only two little curly strands. Her bright blue eyes seemed a little too big for her little head, and her smile was shinning with about five teeth. In her hands she held a small pink bunny. I smiled, shaking my head. She's still as innocent and cute....cute?! I had no time to ponder, for I heard the pitter patter of feet and turned around to see Serena bolting down the steps. She wore a baby blue halter top and black leather pants, with matching high heels. Her hair was the same as usual, flowing behind her as she jumped the last three steps. She went into the closet and grabbed a little black wicker purse with little blue flowers on it. "Ready?" I asked and she shook her head enthused. "Ready!" She bounced. I shook my head and opened the door for her. "Oh, when do you think we'll be back Darien?" "Whenever your curfew is Serena." I said and looked up at her mom. "Oh, well just have her back by 12:30 alright? That's about how long I can keep her father down." She smiled. "Alright, c-ya mom!" "C-ya Mrs. Tsukino." I waved and led Serena to the car. I opened the door for her and she scooted in. I walked around and got in, starting up the 95 Ford Mustang GT Convertible. "Wow, sweet car Darien." She awed as we started driving away. I turned to her and smiled to see her long blonde pigtails blowing behind us. Her head was titled back and her arms raised, the most pleasant smile on her face. Earth to Chiba, it's Serena..Meatball Head! This is a joke, this is NOT REAL! I shook my head and focused on driving. Maybe this wasn't such a good idea after all. We walked up to the house and stopped before entering. Already we could hear the music blasting and see lights from the back. "Okay, you are about to enter the most scariest and most coolest place on earth; a senior party. Do not drink anything unless it's bottled or water from the tap, and do not, whatever you do, go downstairs. Also, don't eat anything, I know that's going to be hard for you." I tried to lighten it up, seeing her nervous gaze go from me to the door. I started up the steps and felt her grab my hand. I turned around and looked at her. "Darien, don't leave me okay?" She said. "Aww Serena, it's not that bad! If it was, I wouldn't be bringing you here." I shook my head. "I know, I just don't know anybody and I don't want to get stuck with some idiot ya know?" She said. I entangled our fingers and pulled her up to the top step. "Alright Serena, I won't." I said and pulled us into the house. My ears were bombarded with Limp Bizkit's "My Way" song and a strobe light. The party's leader, Mark, saw us and came over. "Hey man!" He said and shook my hand. "Hey Mark, is Andrew here?" I asked and he shook his head. "Ya, him and Rita are outside dancing." He answered. "Alright, thanks." I said and pulled Serena outside. His patio acted as the dance floor, his floodlights covered in red and blue cellophane paper, and a disco ball dangling on his gazebo. There was a pool below us, and some of my stupid friends were jumping off the patio into the pool. Serena laughed as she some people playing on his little brother's jungle gym. I looked around but didn't see Andrew or his brownish-red headed girlfriend. "Hey, where's Andrew?" I stopped one of my friends and he pointed up into the tree house. "He really must have nice parents to let him do this." Serena said as we walked across the lawn. "Well...his parents are out of town." I said. "And as long as he cleans it up he won't get in trouble." Suddenly a quad road past us, the person on the back twirling around a torch. "Wow, senior parties are so cool!" Serena sighed as we reached the tree house. "Yes, and a lawsuit waiting to happen. After you." I bowed and she giggled, climbing up the rope ladder. I heard Serena gasp and saw 'the couple' making out in front of the entrance. 'The couple' has been going out since our freshman year, and love making a display of their affection. I rolled my eyes and walked into one of the three adjoining rooms to see Andrew and Rite playing Monopoly. Andrew looked up and smiled. That's Andrew for you. Sometimes I can see him and Serena together, two of the most innocent and friendly people I know. "Hey guys!" He greeted. "Wanna play some Monopoly?" "No thanks." I shook my head. "What's cool to do around here Drew?" "Well, earlier we were dancing and then we tried one of the quads and then we went on a nice quiet walk. Then we came here and are in the middle of a rousing game of Monopoly." Andrew answered. "Andrew's loosing." Rita winked. "Well," I turned back to Serena, whose hand I still held. "What do you want to do?" "Well, actually, I have to go to the bathroom. Then I'd love to go for a walk." She answered. "Alright, Rita can you take her to the bathroom? I don't want her going any where alone." I said. "Sure." Rita nodded, getting up. "Let's go Serena." I walked over to Andrew and sat down. "So dude, how's it going with Serena?" Andrew asked with a smile. "It's great." I nodded. "Didn't I tell ya so, didn't I tell ya so?" Andrew laughed, slapping his hands on his knees. "You should've listened to me three years ago and asked her out then!" "Yeah well, I guess I'm going to have to make up for it now." I said. "I guess so, so what are you planning to do to me on April Fool's?" Andrew said. "Oh, you're just going to have to wait." I said, laughing inside. "I can't wait to get you Darien, it's going to be great!" Andrew cackled, rubbing his hands together. "Yes it is." I whispered. We talked awhile longer when suddenly we were interrupted by Rita, her face flushed. "Rita? What's wrong?" Andrew asked. "We were walking back when someone on a quad grabbed Serena and took her into the forest!" Rita yelled. I heard myself gasp, as something in my heart was pulled. Before I even knew it I was outside and running into the forest by Mark's house. "Serena!" I screamed, running down the path. "SERENA!" "DARIEN!" I heard her scream to my right. I was able to follow the quad's track by the lights from the house and the full moon. "Get OFF of me you freak!" I heard her yell and finally saw them. Some guy had her pinned to a tree, kissing her neck roughly. Anger shot through me, and guilt for letting her go by herself and what was that other emotion...jealousy? I pushed everything aside and rambled into the guy's side. "Get the hell away from her!" I shouted, punching him in the face. He twirled around and fell to the ground with a thud, unconscious. "Oh Darien!" Serena flung herself at me and I unconsciously wrapped my arms around her. After a few moments I pulled her back and was surprised to see tears running down her cheeks. No, tears did not look good on her. So I found myself wiping them away softly, not being able to tear my gaze away from her glistening eyes. My eyes wandered from hers to her parted soft pink lips. I felt her breathe out, her warm breath touching my lips. "Are you okay?" I managed, breaking the silence. She touched her nose, like she does everytime she gets nervous, and nodded. "Yea, I'm alright. That was freaky!" She sighed and smiled back up at me. "Thanks Darien, my knight in shinning armor." She said and gave me a quick hug. "Serena! Darien!" I turned around to see Andrew and Rita running up to us. Andrew came over to Serena and grasped her shoulders. "Are you alright Serena?" "Yes, I'm alright." She nodded. "I'm so sorry Serena, I shouldn't have brought you here. Do you want to go home?" I asked and she looked up at me, and slapped me on the arm. "No!" She rolled her eyes and started walking back to the house. "I want to dance! Are you coming or what?" I just shook my head, following her. She amazes me sometimes. The rest was pretty much a blur, we danced, and danced some more. But when I walked her up to her house, everything came to a jolting halt. She stood on the porch, the golden light casting her hair aglow and a shadow to cover over her face. Although, I could still see her eyes, those blue orbs full of innocence and trust, trust I probably didn't deserve for all I've put her through since 8th grade. "I'm sorry Serena." I found myself saying, and she stared at me quizzically. "For what?" She asked, and I cleared my throat. "Well, for tonight and for everything I've done to you." I said and she opened her mouth, but I put my finger over her soft lips and instantly regretted it. Geeze Darien, what are you doing to yourself? "Just please, let me talk. I've treated you like crap over the years with all my teasing, but, that was the only way I knew how to talk to you I guess. I've always considered you as a friend, in a weird way. Just, say you'll forgive me and I promise that from now on I'll try to stop teasing you." "Try to stop?" She raised and eyebrow, crossing her arms. "Well, what do you except from me, a miracle?" I smirked. She sighed and gave me a quick hug. "I guess you're right. I forgive you, even though there's nothing to forgive. Thanks for taking me to the party Darien, I really had a good time after that little incident." She said. "Yea look I'm so--" "Chill Darien, it wasn't your fault. I'll see ya Monday then." She said and started walking away. She stopped all the sudden and turned back to me. She ran back down the steps and pecked me on the cheek before running back up and slamming the door. I smiled, putting my hand to my cheek. "Goodnight, Serena." I sighed, walking back to my car.
