Now that I’ve arrived at the final chapter, I’ve got to say that this story was a blast to write. After this, though, I’ve got a more serious tale in mind. But with my strange sense of humor, it’s only a matter of time before the urge to get silly strikes me again. Thanks to everyone who has taken the time to write. It means so much to know that others are enjoying my work. Special thanks to Karyana, Princess of the Moon and all points south of Delaware, for her gracious permission to use the character "Lorilei". The S’Eyre are mine, lock, stock and gates – so please ask permission if you’d like to use them. If you don’t, then in the name of Rhode Island, I’ll punish you! That just doesn’t have the same dramatic punch as Usagi’s speech does it? Speaking of which… Standard Disclaimer: Even though they are used in this story, I do not claim to own "Sailor Moon", any of the attendant characters or the City of Cleveland. "Royal Wedding" A Sailor Moon Story in Six Parts By Meara Chapter 6 – "Picture Perfect" or "A Plethora of Pretty Princesses" Gordon MacLaren was perfect for his job as Sargent-at-Arms for Crystal Tokyo. His almost thirty years in the military has prepared him for any number of bizarre, combat situations. He could take on explosives, spies, and heavily armed combatants without batting an eye. Since the rise of Crystal Tokyo, he’d learned to accept the existence of extraterrestrials and even talking cats (well sort of anyway). Magic, however, was something he’d always steadfastly refused to believe in. He was very sure that it was all just superstition and nonsense. That evening, however, as he strolled through the wing of the palace that housed the ambassadors (to check on the new security system), he saw two things that would forever change his mind. The first was a stunning young woman dressed in a navy blue Channel pantsuit. That, in itself wasn’t particularly odd. Any number of people came to speak with the various Ambassadors every day. It was the way she got to Prince Jameth’s door - by walking right out of a wall. She didn’t even paused to smooth her long, dark green hair, as if moving through solid wood and stone was an everyday occurrence for her. Perhaps it was, and that was what bothered him. His mind had little time to deal with this as she stopped and politely knocked on the door in front of her. As she went into what MacLaren knew to be the S’Eyre prince’s private rooms, a flash of light caught his attention. He whirled, a warrior’s instinct coming to the fore. This was when the second and most interesting surprise of the evening happened. The sight that greeted his bulging eyes was, in many ways, more shocking than having a woman appear out of nowhere. Golden light caressed the female form that was at its center, transforming her into a creature that seemed more than human. Like Aphrodite rising from the sea, the woman was bathed and transmuted by the power that flowed around her. Gordon MacLaren immediately recognized the woman as the Senshi of Venus. Normally, having one of the Queen’s special guardians appear eased his mind, but not today. MacLaren had seen the woman just before the light came and changed her in a way that was, well…magical. It was Aino Minako. His sweet, simple little Mina was Sailor Venus?! Gordon knew that he would have to confront her with this knowledge and all the uncomfortable implications it raised (Did this mean that the Queen’s other close friends were also Sailor Senshi? There were four of them – this was beginning to make a lot of sense!). He wasn’t sure he was up to hearing the answers. It would most likely involve the word "magic" a goodly number of times. But first, he decided, a drink was in order. As Sargent Gordon MacLaren left the hall way in front of the Ambassador’s door, he heard the unmistakable voice of that talking, white cat, Artemis. It was then that he decided to have several drinks – of single malt scotch. "Geez, Mina" said Artemis in an affronted tone, "Transforming in the middle of a hallway is not what I taught you. What if someone saw you?" Mina waved a dismissive hand. "No one saw and excuse me, Superman, but there aren’t any handy telephone booths for me to change in. Now be quiet so I can listen." She pressed the side of her head against the wall. If Mina had hoped that her Senshi form somehow had better hearing, she was mistaken. "Damn" she whispered, "I can’t hear anything." Artemis had his head against the wall, too. His feline hearing was superior to even a Senshi’s. He didn’t like what seemed suspiciously like eavesdropping and wasn’t about to tell her what was being said. "I’ll remind you to bring a glass next time we do this sort of thing." Mina’s index finger shot into the air as an idea came to her. She cupped her hands and softly called for her "Love and Beauty Shock". With careful skill she fashioned the energy into the shape she desired. Even Artemis had to be a little impressed as Venus lifted her hand and placed the golden "glass" on the wall. "Artemis, you’re a genius." she said as she glanced at his unhappy face. "Don’t be such a grouch, this could be a lot worse, you know. If you’ll remember, Rei wanted to be the one who got the scoop." The white cat grunted in grudging agreement. He was very fond of Rei and she was an excellent Senshi of Mars, but subtlety was not her strong point. She would have grabbed one of the Prince’s household and threatened to fry him if he didn’t talk. Maybe, he sighed loudly this way was better, after all. The golden haired warrior of love shushed at him. "Jameth is coming into the room – quiet!" <<<<<>>>>> Jameth bowed courteously to the woman he knew could be none other than the legendary Keeper of the Timegate, Setsuna. "Greeting revered ancestoress. How may I serve you?" He was attired in a shade of green that had been known to blind people. The first thing Jameth could do was change into clothing that didn’t threaten to render her unconscious, she thought, but chose a less volatile topic instead. "Please sit down. There’s something you need to know." She patted the empty cushion on the couch next to her. As the amorous ambassador did just that, he ever so courteously got off a pre-emptive strike. "I love the fair Princess Serenity and nothing you can say will ever change that." There was a shade too much passion in his voice and the statement sounded like bad melodrama. If Jameth had been expecting an argument, he doomed to disappointment. The woman beside him raised one elegant eyebrow. "That’s not why I’m here today. But since you brought the subject up, I do have a few things to say about that" The ghost of a smile crossed her face as she saw Jameth’s expression. "You assumed that I was here to try and talk you out of your pursuit of Serenity didn’t you?" The look on the Prince’s face said it all. "Assuming things will get you into trouble, Jameth." She reached under the sofa she was on and pulled out a long, wrapped parcel from where it had been inconspicuously resting. "This is from the High King. He wants you to present it to King Endymion as a token of esteem." Jameth took it, somewhat sheepishly. "I see." The woman beside him did the last thing he expected of a legend - she laughed loudly. "No you don’t! If you really did, you’d have given up the pursuit of Neo-Queen Serenity a while back." Jameth had given her the opening she’d been waiting for and she wasn’t about to waste it. "You do realize that she’s not the Serenity – Heir to the Silver Millenium, don’t you? That Serenity died over two thousand years ago!" "Of course she is!" the perplexed peer protested. "She’s exactly as all the history books say…" he floundered. This was not going at all well. He had thought that the Keeper of Timegate was supposed to be more conservative than this. "…And she does call herself Serenity." "Appearances can be deceiving. I could call myself Hulk Hogan, but that doesn’t mean I’ll be challenging you to a Texas Cage Match anytime soon." She countered, green eyes sparkling with mischief, "You say you love Serenity, but do you really know her? What’s her favorite color, favorite food? Her nickname, or the book she keeps on her nightstand?" The questions stopped the love lorn lothario cold. He’d never had it put to him this way before. "I…don’t know." He finally admitted. "But it doesn’t matter, Gatekeeper! I have loved Serenity from the first time I read about her." The green hair played about her shoulders as the woman shook her head. "You’re making the same mistake people often make about the Keeper of the Timegate. Serenity isn’t an unchanging icon you can place on a pedestal and worship. She’s a living, breathing, changing person, who was given the amazing gift of a second chance by her mother. She’s not who she was two thousand years ago." A chuckle escaped her lips as she added, "Then again, none of us are." Jameth stared at her for a moment. When she had spoken of the Gatekeeper, it was almost as if she was talking about someone else. As if the Gatekeeper was a thing instead of a person. Is that what he’d been doing with Serenity? The thought echoed uncomfortably in his head as the woman stood to leave. She touched a key shaped charm on her throat and it glowed. "Just consider what I’ve said, Jameth." The air in back of her filled with silver light and she moved toward it. The prince gave a gasp as he saw that within the light was a second figure. A figure that looked so like the woman he had just been talking to that they could have been the same person. Standing in the corridor of eternity and holding the Timestaff before her, was very clearly, Setsuna, Keeper of the Timegate and Senshi of Pluto (Who still thought that easiest way to fix this mess was to drop Jameth down a dry well). Lorilei looked back and gave poor Jameth a wink. "Remember what I said, about making assumptions? Think about it and I know you’ll do the right thing." <<<<<>>>>> When Mina had reported back to her friends, she had to admit that she wasn’t totally sure what had happened. "All I know is that one minute Setsuna was telling him not make assumptions and then next he was making noises like all the oxygen had been pumped out of the room." "Now there’s a pleasant thought" smiled Rei. Ami was deep in thought as she considered all the possible things Setsuna could have said to him. "Well, if he behaves himself at the reception Thursday night, then whatever she did obviously worked. We’ll just have to be patient." <<<<<>>>>> It was a little over two weeks until the public ceremony in which the King and Queen would publicly renew their wedding vows to one another. People of importance, and those who just thought they were had begun pouring in from every place on the globe. Gifts, both large and small had also stared to arrive and that meant they had to be received and acknowledged in a very public manner. That’s what the reception tonight was all about. All four of the Inner Senshi were on duty and an untransformed Setsuna was somewhere in the crowd, a last line of defense if need be. As it turned out, they only thing the Queen and King would need saving from was bad taste. One after the other, all manner of very expensive and flashy babbles was presented to them. Usagi smiled and nodded until her face hurt. Mamoru was lucky, she thought, all he had to do was look formidable (and he did it so very well). She was the one expected to speak and say thank you for yet another truly awful piece of "art". In the back of the room, Gordon MacLaren caught the eye of Sailor Jupiter. (He knew now that she was also Kino Makoto, that conversation having gone much better than he could have ever anticipated. At all his meetings with his young "boss", she now brought some of her incredible pastry.) She nodded to him and he moved to stand with the S’Eyre ambassador, Prince Jameth. MacLaren tugged at his own formal dress kilt before reaching down to heft the large polished wood case that held a present for the King. He gave the prince a quick glance. Since the prissy man was wearing an outfit in shades of burnt orange, a longer look would have made MacLaren’s stomach churn. "Are you ready, Your Excellency?" Asked the Sargent in as neutral a voice as he could manage. The alien prince had not missed the look of reproach in the guard’s eyes. Sniffing delicately, he looked at the burly bewhiskered man. (As if Jameth would ever take fashion advice from a man in a skirt!) "Of course." He said in a superior tone, "You may follow me." With a final fluff of the matching ocher lace at his neck, he strode confidently toward the dais that held Earth’s monarchs. This night would change his life’s course forever. It had taken him days of endlessly pouring over the two thousand year old Treaty of Selene before he’d seen it. After the visit from Setsuna (Jameth was sure that the Keeper of the Timegate had managed to play some kind of temporal prank on him. He’d never heard mention that Setsuna even had a twin, therefore, one couldn’t possibly exist!) he’d given up all his assumptions about Serenity. It was then that he realized that she wasn’t the very last Princess of the Silver Millenium! He still had a chance to make his dream come true. Jameth noted with pride that every eye in the room was on him. He bowed deeply as he came before the Queen and King. "Your Majesties, I bring to you the affection of his Imperial Highness, Cryill, High King the S’Eyre. He rejoices with you as you renew your vows of love to one another." He waited for MacLaren to place the gleaming wooden box before the King. "He sends this gift to his Majesty, Endymion, King of Earth." This surprised the King, and he moved to take the box. He opened it so that everyone assembled might see the contents. Mamoru held up an exquisite sword of an unknown metal that gave a soft golden glow as he held it. The hilt was shaped like an open rose that then closed about his hand as he gripped the weapon. Etched into the fine blade was a single, long rose. "It is called ‘The Rose’s Thorn’ and was made for you by the greatest weapons-smith in the entire Imperium. The High King asks that as you wear it you remember always the ancient pact of friendship between our peoples!" If Mamoru was surprised beyond words with the gift, the overdressed ambassador’s next utterance made him positively ecstatic. "And in accordance with that treaty, I ask your permission, gracious King, to fulfil the wishes of its originators. I will seek the heart and hand of one of the last Princesses of the Silver Millenium. I ask to be able to court," He pointed to each of the Senshi as he spoke, "the fair Princesses of Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Mercury!" Mamoru was almost giddy with relief that his long, personal nightmare was over. He burst into delighted laughter. "I don’t know if you can get one of them to agree to marry you, Prince Jameth," he could feel Usagi kicking him in the back of the leg, "but you are most welcome to try!" <<<<<>>>>>> In the northern part of the nation that had been known as Japan sat a church built in 1865. Massive, fully mature trees shaded the simple, stone exterior on that perfect fall day. Cloudless blue skies allowed the gentle rays of the autumnal sun to make the red and gold leaves glow as if by magic. A light breeze occasionally teased at them and they would fall like a shower of jewels to carpet the ground. Through this wonderland, a small, select group of individuals made their way inside. Those who could not be inside the building itself, had the opportunity to see the ceremony on holographic projectors that were in the center of every town and village on the planet. It was a beautiful, romantic drama that was being watched by over 20 million people. In a small room, at the back of the tiny church the Queen of Earth stood as still as possible, at least for her, as the last buttons on her gown were closed. The dress was a magnificent creation of antique ivory satin. It had a wide, sloping neckline that allowed the material to drape into soft folds just above the Queen’s décolletage. In the back delicate cream colored silk roses held the satin as it gently draped down in sensuous folds, allowing a view of her shoulders and upper back. The bodice was fitted to the waist, then flowed like water to the ground. Long sleeves ended in lace that played at her wrists. She wore a necklace of diamonds and pearls that had been a gift that very morning from her husband. Matching pearl studs rested on her ears and in her hair, giving off a luster that made her skin seem to glow. The elegant veil of translucent lace sat atop her golden hair and flowed well past her shoulders. It was like the fulfillment of a dream for her and she sighed heavily. Rei tugged at the buttons as she gave Usagi a quick elbow. "Stand still and suck it in while I get these button closed!" One could always trust the Senshi of Mars to bring her Queen back to reality in a hurry. "Geez, how much weight have you put on, anyway? If you don’t stop pigging out every five minutes you’re going to be bigger than Cleveland by the time the baby comes!" "I am not getting fat! Five pounds, Rei – I’ve only gained five pounds" Usagi protested, although she did as Rei had so prosaically put it, "suck it in". "It’s not so much the extra weight as the way your body is storing it, now." Ami chimed in happily as she slipped on shoes to match the royal blue taffeta gown she was wearing. "Right around your liver." Mina was helping Mako fasten the emerald and gold necklace that matched her bridesmaid gown. "In other words, Usagi-chan, you’re going to get a spare tire." Said Mako as she winked at Rei. "But don’t worry, Rei is just giving you a hard time. You look fabulous!" They all did. Each of the bridesmaids dresses were a simpler version of Usagi’s gown, but in their own colors. Ami was in royal blue, Mako in deep emerald green, Rei in burgundy and Mina in burnished gold. Usagi had given each of them a necklace of precious stones and gold to go with their gowns as a gift. "Better be nice to her, Rei," said Mina with a smile in her voice, "Or Usagi- chan just may take back your necklace." She fingered her own necklace of rare amber and gold. Rei gave Usagi a final pat. "Finished! Where’s Setsuna anyway? She made this gown, after all. Shouldn’t she be here to see that it fits properly?" "She said she had a promise to keep, but would be back in time for the service." Said Usagi as she turned to Rei. She reached out and fussily adjusted the fantastic ruby and gold creation that adorned her friend. "But we’ll have to start without her if she doesn’t get here soon." As if one cue, there was a small tapping at the door. Ami leaned over and opened it to reveal Mamoru in a simple but elegant, black tuxedo. He smiled in sheer delight as he saw the "bride" and her friends. "Sorry, Ladies, but its time. We’ve got a church full of squirming dignitaries out there and being late is something," he gave Usagi a wink, "Tuxedo Kamen will not forgive." The joyful strains of Bach’s "Brandenburg Concerto" filled the small church and the assembled guests rose to their feet. Down the center aisle came the Princesses of Mercury and Jupiter, then following just behind, those of Mars and Venus. They processed to the front of the church and turned. Down the aisle, with a stately, measured step, came the Queen and King of Earth. The look of joy on their faces brought a smile to all that looked on them. With grace and polish they came to the front of the church, stopped. The priest signaled them to turn to face each other. Mamoru felt such joy as he’d never known before. This was the moment he’d waited two lifetimes for. That he and Usagi had all ready been legally married mattered not a whit to him. It was the opportunity to stand before the entire world and proclaim his undying love for the woman who firmly held his hand that brought a smile to his lips. His heart was pounding so loudly in his chest that Mamoru barely heard the words he spoke. Any words today would be mere echoes of the eternal devotion that he gave to his beloved. She was his life, his soul, his future and his only source of serenity. Usagi thought her heart would burst with joy. Even though she and Mamoru had been married in front of their friends less than two months ago, there was finality in this day that made her life complete. With a clear voice, she rededicated herself to Mamoru, and promised to love and honor him till her life was done. The priest smiled as he reaffirmed that they were indeed, husband and wife. As they turned to process out of the church, a lingering glow caught Usagi’s attention. She looked up at it and tightened her grip on Mamoru's hand. He followed her line of sight to the choir loft saw the impossible. Sailor Pluto stood, with her staff in hand, by what could only have been the entrance to the Timegate. The great, glowing door was wide open and in it stood three figures. Three live figures, not ghosts or apparitions. Mamoru’s breath caught in his chest and his throat tightened as he recognized them. It was his mother and father. They held each other and smiled at him, joy in their faces. His mother reached out to the woman beside her. Usagi had tears of wonder in her crystal blue eyes as she saw her mother. The crescent moon sigil on her head shone brightly and she mouthed the words, "I love you". Selene, last Queen of the Silver Millenium smiled at the couple and, raising her hand to her lips, gently blew them a kiss of farewell. Neo-Queen Serenity dropped into a deep curtsy and the King of Earth bowed respectfully as the people in the loft turned to disappear back into the mists of time. The look on the faces of Rei, Ami, Mako and Mina told them that they too had seen Setsuna’s gift to the royal couple. With their friends around them, and the crowd applauding, Usagi and Mamoru processed down the aisle and out into the glorious sunshine of the most perfect of autumn days. <<<<>>>> Aino Minako couldn’t sleep. There were many reason that might account for that. It had been an exciting, magical day. Maybe her head was still spinning from the renewal ceremony. Or maybe it was the grand ball that followed. There were more possible reasons for her wakefulness than she could count. But most likely, it was because Jameth, Prince and Ambassador of the S’Eyre was standing beneath her window bellowing his lusty version of "Love me Tender." Mina was going to get Mamoru for this. ~~~The End~~~
